TRiO students volunteer at Greater Boston Food Bank, learn about how hunger affects parts of Massachusetts

TRiO students spent time sorting goods and packing boxes at the Greater Boston Food Bank on Thursday, July 5. By the end of their volunteer shift, students sorted over 3,000 pounds of food that will be distributed to those in need in Massachusetts.

As students left the food bank that day, they were already planning their return.

Last week at the Chelsea Campus of Bunker Hill Community College, TRiO students from Chelsea High School learned how to make a good impression during job and college interviews.

The day began with a workshop where students learned and discussed important skills needed when interviewing for a job or a college. After the classroom time, volunteers from various fields, including architecture, medical research, accounting and education came in to conduct mock interview with students.

Students walked away from this experience learning that interviewers want them to be successful, as well as how to explain their accomplishments in a way that makes them appealing candidates.

On Friday, over 40 students from Chelsea High School attended a résumé workshop at the Seaport World Trade Center hosted by volunteers from PwC. TRiO students were among those who worked with PwC staff to develop and refine résumés that will be used for applying to colleges and jobs. At the end of the workshop, students walked away with a greater understanding of how to express who they are in a compelling way and with a digital copy of their new résumé on a thumb drive so they can continue to add to their résumés.

Students share what they learned from the experience with PwC volunteers.

2012 Boston National College Fair

Chelsea High School TRiO students explored college opportunities and connected with college representatives at the Boston National College Fair. Before going to the fair on May 3, students prepared by practicing what questions they would ask of the admissions representatives.

On the way home, students reflected about the colleges they discovered. Students were impressed by how many colleges were represented at the fair and navigated well through the over 350 college tables present.

I liked to see information from the colleges because schools are very competitive, which makes me more motivated to do better in high school. -Jennifer O., Class of 2013

Students left the fair excited to visit campuses of colleges over the summer in the the fall so they will be prepared to complete the college application process!

We met some great CHS Seniors during On the Spot Admissions for Bunker Hill Community College yesterday. With so much happening in your life right now, what should you be doing to stay on track with your plans for college?

This spring, you should:

Visit colleges that have invited you to enroll.
Review your college acceptances and compare the colleges’ financial aid packages.
Contact a school’s financial aid office if you have questions about the aid that school has offered you. In fact, getting to know your financial aid staff early is a good idea no matter what—they can tell you about deadlines, other aid for which you might wish to apply, and important paperwork you might need to submit.
When you decide which school you want to attend, notify that school of your commitment and submit any required financial deposit. Many schools require this notification and deposit by May 1.
